The Dark Side of Abattoirs: Addressing Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Abattoirs across Nigeria are vital for food production but contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. Tyre-burning practices used to process animal skins release harmful carbon monoxide and other pollutants into the atmosphere.

The Environmental Cost of Tyre Burning

In the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) alone, abattoirs in Dei-Dei, Karu, Kubwa, and Gwagwalada, along with surrounding states, produce alarming amounts of CO2. If unchecked, a single slaughterhouse could emit 120 metric tons of CO2 within two years.

Solutions for a Greener Future

  1. Innovative Alternatives: Develop eco-friendly methods for processing animal skins without burning tyres.
  2. Policy Redefinition: Governments must establish stricter environmental regulations.
  3. Public Awareness: Sensitize communities on the long-term effects of their actions on the environment.

Abattoirs are essential, but they must operate sustainably. Through collaboration between stakeholders, including governments, businesses, and civil society, we can mitigate their environmental impact.
