Outreach on the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies
Date: Wednesday, September 7th, 2022
Location:
Event Overview:
To commemorate the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies, EDASI led a strategic sensitization outreach to abattoirs and slaughterhouses in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and neighboring states.
The Challenge:
The burning of animal hides and skins using tyres at abattoirs releases massive amounts of carbon monoxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases (GHG), significantly contributing to climate change.
- FCT Abattoirs: Deidei, Karu, Kubwa, Gwagwalada, and Mpape.
- Neighboring States: Nasarawa, Niger, and Kogi, hosting over 16 slaughterhouses around Abuja’s suburbs.
It is estimated that, if unchecked, a single local slaughterhouse could release 120 metric tons of CO2 within the next two years. This issue urgently calls for innovative, sustainable solutions to protect the environment and public health.
Key Action Points:
- Innovative Practices: Developing alternative methods to remove animal hair without burning tyres, reducing CO2 emissions.
- Policy Advocacy: Redefining environmental policies to safeguard the ozone layer and mitigate hazards caused by current abattoir practices.
- Public Awareness: Educating stakeholders, including butchers, abattoir workers, and consumers, on the environmental and health risks associated with tyre-burning practices.
Stakeholders Involved:
- Federal Ministry of Health
- Federal Ministry of Environment
- Federal Ministry of Agriculture
- Abattoir Business Owners
- Civil Society Organizations
- Consumers
This outreach aims to bring all major stakeholders together to adopt eco-friendly practices and protect the environment from further harm.
Together, we can make a difference.
Join us in our mission to drive sustainable change for a healthier environment and stronger communities.
