Climate Change Advocacy in Workplace: Reducing Green House Gass Emmission and our carbon footprint.
An outreach to two Abattiors and slaughter houses on the international Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies on Wednesday, September 7th, 2022, in Abuja and it surbub.
Animal skin burning In the federal capital territory (FCT) alone is alarming, there are four abattoirs, namely, Deidei, Karu, Kubwa, and Gwagwalada under the Agricultural services department of the Federal capital territory (FCTA). There is also a slaughterhouse at Mpape under the Bwari area council. In the neighbouring states, which share borders by Abuja, such as Nasarawa , Niger and Kogi State. It has about 16 slaughter houses around Abuja surbub. In all this work places Tyres are used to burn the hide and skins of animals such as cow, goat and rams You can hardly find any village, town or city without a functional abattoir which takes care of slaughtering animals meant for consumption. The skin burning process through which tyres are burnt to remove the hair on the skin of the animals releases thick carbon monoxide CO2 into the sky and thereby coursing greenhouse gas emissions GHG. It was stated that if things goes on unchecked a single local slaughter house will be releasing 120 metric tons of CO2 into the sky within the next 2years, for this reason, we have to go out on a massive sensitisation of the hazard and implication of this chemicals that are being released into the atmosphere by the action of butchers, the abatior workers and the management. Meanwhile the major stakeholders such as Federal Ministry of Health, Federal Ministry of Environment, Federal Ministry of Agricultural, Abatior Busines Owners, Civil Society and the consumers are needed to be brought to the table to collectively address this issues before it gets out of hand.
1)We have to develop innovative ways of removing the hair of the animals without burning the tyres, which releases CO2 into the atmosphere.
2) The government should redefine environmental policies that will protect the people and the environment from ozone layers hazards.
3) The public needs to be sensitized on the implication of their actions to the environment.
